theories and philosophies

I found something.
Something that made me smile.
A tear even came to surface.

I found my design philosophy which was handed in to my contemporary design lecturer 2 years ago. This past week i have been determined to finalize me theories for my thesis, but most importantly for the theories to be implemented into a design language in a 3D space and for me to create a new design philosophy.

so here was the piece of paper which reminded me - whats it is all about...MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
"It is important to create an experience; an atmosphere; not just a room. One must taste the room, feel the room and automatically create an emotional connection to it.

Balance for the space is vital. It needs to balance the mind, body and soul so that the inhabitants release a high productivity yet in a relax and natural way... Balance is achieved by symmetry.

inspiration is achieved by voids and solids. Emotion is achieved by light, room temperature and proximity. Colour is played with to create moods. One feels comfortable with repetition of line, pattern and colour.

Spaces need to become a friend. One who you need to talk too; listen and relax with. Laugh and cry with. Our 'friend' protects us from the worldly stresses and must help us produce our daily task; thus circulation; texture and arrangements must release positivity...

A happy friend makes us happy... A happy environment makes happy inhabitants. We find ourselves within our friends and partners, therefore should we not find ourselves within environments and discover?!?

What is bedtime? and whats plotting without trouble?

Ok - lets be honest here... the time is 03:56 am. Yes i am still up - which is very common. I have just been moaning and using decorative french at my PC, my laptop and my A3 printer. As usual something technical HAS TO GO WRONG! Its the night, oh sorry, pardon, the MORNING before a handin. 4 and half hours to be exact. My one eye is extremely itchy and im shocked at how bad my eyesight has become! We have our first design presentation, something I am usually very good at, but Im nervous - honestly - unsettled is a better word to descibe why i have not fallen into my bed yet, and am still up behind my slave-driver (aka my PC).

So i guess Ill toughen up. I like what i have designed, i have answered the brief according to my concept. the layout works. BUT (there is always a but) what is my new design lecturer looking for? I like to try somthing different, experiment, this is known as "out-of-the-box" thinkers and designers. now whats troubling me is, what is my box and how "out-of-it" can I go OR not go???

"to be or not to be" is : " to box or not to box" for me...

The birds are starting to sing now - i think that is every architect and designer's worst sound.... the sound of "Yes you are still up and the day of your presentation is here!" so let me go and nap.. nap for 2 hours..

Locatin Inspiration

I have been wanting to take a trip out to New Brighton to visit the Red Location Museum for a while now, but everyone I spoke to was worried about the safty aspect. Haha... no worries, today, on spur of the moment, three girls : Chrisma, Hayley and myslef went! (And yes - we got a bit lost!!)But oh my! INSPIRATION for the NATION! We couldn't believe the architecture and design, how they made "shack pods" to house different functions and genres. I couldn't take enough photos! We couldn't believe that we were in the middle of a location in Port Elizabeth. I was so proud! I will upload photos later.

We then went to Chrisma's site, a road down from the location. Its a beautiful (rundown) warehouse with Industrial Victorian gables. Perfect for her function. It was a bit of an eye-opener to see how the "other half" live, sad but yet its a tight and strong community. We were told to stay in our car and to drive around the building to take photos, which we did. The kids flocked to us like bees to honey, all wanting to be in our photograohs. Thank goodness we had a packet of biscuits in the car with us, as we ended up giving them the whole packet!

Take a drive out to New Brighton and go and see the Red Location Museum! Its amazing and clear to see why they have won so many awards... off to research about it more now!

Salani Kahule!

my lightbulb moment

The other day, whilst doodling in my visual journal, i had an epiphany about what i wanted to achieve by the end of the year. This is what i wrote down....

“As designers we are history makers. When I started studying, I walked into my 1st year studio ready to design “4 wall” spaces. How Naive? After 4 years I will walk out ready to design spaces for people, to challenge their way of thinking and being. I will be designing better people. I will be designing better communities. I will designing how the world will behave and function in the future. As designers we design tangible spaces, hopefully beautifully designed for the function it serves which enable the inhabitants to best perform and function. This can be tangible and intangible. What is important is that the space gives meaning and identity to the inhabitants, the context and to the community. As designers, we are not just designing 4 walls – we are designing people.”

I came home with plans!

Wow! what a day! I signed class register to find that my name and details were still not on the list as they have miscaptured my information, so had to sort that out which kinda put in me in a bad mood as it was a scorcher of the day and running around in the heat was no fun.... but things started to look up! Chrisma and I once again went down to council (they now know us by name!) and i was able to print my plans, elevations and sections and get a history of the renovations and additions for my building. the plans were so old, that I was a bit scared handling them. So I'm very pleased that i now have plans and can start working. Draft 1 of the document is due for tomorrow. My logo is coming along, now need to scan it in and start finalizing it and choose my typeface for my name and tag phase. Lets get cracking!

The blogging begins...

This is a blog spot for me to blog - blog about my final year at University, my design process and development so that my lecturers and external moderators can "check up" on me. DON'T WORRY I'M WORKING 24/7!

But as it is my blog spot - I will keep my personality alive in it.

So first thing first... my Building! I had problems (and tears) with my first few proposed buildings, the first one was to use the Old Tramway Station. It would have been an ideal location and context for my concept. But ... it wasn't meant to be. Eventually after 4 or 5 buildings I found it! The old Cuthbert's building on the corner of Govan Mbeki Avenue and Britannia Street. Perfectly located in the right context which will interlink with other proximities and in the heart of the CBD's rejuvenation development, which I am very interested and passionate about. So that is the building.

Now the concept : A performing school of Arts. This includes, drama, music and dance as well as incorporating a film and directing school. Not only will the school provide these principles, but also offer evening workshops in theatre set design, costume design and lighting design, thus providing employment in a specialised industry.
