3D MAX rendering... number 1

I honestly tried to load the 3D MAX walk through onto the blog but hopelessly failed as i didn't have the patience to wait... i simply have too much other work to get on with. so I will try upload the whole movie once everything is finished.... so in the meantime here are some still images. no detail in these, as MAX would've freaked out, so will post the detail design images up later this week. i hope. Enjoy!!!

A bold line of expression - Welcome the Graffiti chair

One has to wait for the good things in life... and this is true to my design of the Graffiti Chair and the manufactoring events that occured. Eventually I drove home with the chair in the backof the car, carefully and proudly, like a new mother driving driving her newborn home from the hospital.

Here are some manufacturing photos that I took at the factory... (Herman Brink Wooden Furniture)

and here is the final product! :)

budget - what?

Today was an interesting day of accepting: accepting to getting lost in industrial / factory areas and freeways and accepting that salesmen love quoting the highest price with a fat smiles on they faces, knowing that you have no choice but to accept.

for two weeks up to now, I have been phoning around, shopping for the best prices, going to factories, seeing production, meeting with specialists, all to ensure i fully understand how to design and what to spec. Today was a confirmation day, so that all materials can be handled over to my dearly trusted furniture maker. NO.

I was fooled by one shop that I needed to purchase their highly specialized industrial spray paint, which was half the price of the shop that i was recommended to go to. Confusing?? So my mind thought that there had to be a difference between the two specifications and seeing that shop a (the cheaper supplier) was a bit confused by the finish and couldn't show me a sample, my gut told me to go with shop b (the recommended specialists). So i phoned in and placed my order with the lady that i dealt with that morning. 5 minutes later, i was told that i needed a primer. "OK, I said, include the primmer and what is the total price, VAT inclusive?", the long pause said it all!!! double than expected price! shop A quoted me 1/4 the price that shop B quoted. I felt so sick. I agreed. hung up the phone. and sat down. WOW.

Budget BLOWN.

then i also decided to go with the stainless steel supports for aesthetic reasons for the same design. three times the price than what was quoted with mild steel. I agreed. hung up the phone and sat down.

Budget BLOWN.

well at least i will be having a high spec chair for a once off high end chair... so that makes me a designer i guess. blowing the budget for beauty.

component designs

after 32 hours of staying awake and Corel draw freaking out and crashing and spending nearly 6 hours wrapping cassette ribbon - i have component designs.... now just to confirm with joiner and manufacture the chair. wola!... here are some layouts of what i presented today. Had good response to the light and the wrapping of the cassette ribbon and had a good idea to spray the final light with "art glue" to keep the ribbon in place - as its SLIPPERY!!!

im going deeper underground

Hi all... so had a theory breakthrough on how i can "get deeper". Im now researching Graffiti, African pop art and retro and street style... and believe it or not - they all share the same theory... EXPRESSION!! so watch the library shelves for the book to hit the shelf in 2011! ha ha.. im also throwing in " drum and bass" YES believe it! im focusing on what the sub-culture and youth are doing now, 2010.. HOW WHERE and WHAT and the bottom line is they are EXPRESSING themselves. <<<>>>
so off to another drum and bass party this Friday, going to be brave enough to take a camera along and show you the world of music and dance thumping through your veins. .. as they say on the dance floor - "it feeds your soul"

I am going to give this thesis a dose of bass... who says that we cant?!

31 August 2010

here are some new conceptual developments for the Logo and typeface of the name. Today in class there was a progression as a typeface was chosen with an idea of a logo. also what has been finalized are the component designs. looks like there will be 4
1. the unplugged light
2. the fast forward light
3. the play chair
4. the (LEGO) Wobbly stool....ill post images up when details have been finalized, in the meantime please feel free to comment on the logo development!! :)

So as the final drafts for the thesis are being submitted, here is a sneak preview of the layouts of the design chapter...

there's more...

here are some more presentation posters from midyear...

getting tangled

time seems to be getting less and less, like a trogen virus is eating away at the number of hours in the day! so... in so little time, with so much still to do, I find it has a strangling effect on me... hence "getting tangled" decisions - decisions - specifications need to be finalized! But as any designer would say... "one can never completely solve a design idea, there will always be something more to add, change and edit.

Here was the proposed conceptual design that i presented mid-year... not much has changed from layout and circulation... only the finer details and material application. since June, i have transform the 7th floor, the attic, into a Roof Top terrace garden, hence allowing even sunlight in through the multi-volume atrium and creating an interaction with the skyline within the city center.

change is good - it opens your mind to new possibilities

Change is something that can scare you of excite you... for me - i need change! and this entry is explaining my constant need for change..

As you can see, i have been exploring with the new blog spot active profiles, why? Because I simply can... its fun, creating something different, trying ti achieve the best. unfortunately i dont have much Internet time to change the background - so wait a few days till more gigs are loaded and ill try and finalize my profile.

Five years later and four months left and i hope that time flies because I have big plans for next year... big as in daa daa daa daaaa.... "FREE TIME" and time to live again, sleep again and i also suppose be human again?! Its is a surreal feeling. Well four months left and still a bit to do...

June Portfolio

Its that mid-year break, where normally everyone sighs from relief and puts their feet up and chills out, well not this June. Its 2010 Soccer World Cup and WOW but a busy and festive time it has been here in South Africa and I for one am very proud of South Africa, our people and our team! So whilst touring around my country, i have been blown away by inspiration ive found on very street corner. I suppose my jaw-dropping moments were mainly experienced in Cape Town. The old historic buildings, the tiny coffee shops and vibrant design!!! I felt like I was back in Europe waling around in the pouring rain on the high streets - so as soon as photos are sent to me - ill post them up

4 Walls and a light = Room?

Here is my very first attempt with rendering 3D MAX, our lighting TUT showing differetne light fixtures and their effects. Natrual daylight casting through the window was a bit tricky, need to watch out on the shadows, or lask thereof.

Govan Mabeki Avenue - white model

Here are some of my stills from my white model 3D max rendering.
